What is a Pulmonary Function Test?

Pulmonary function tests are an essential component of a respiratory surveillance/protection program.   A pulmonary function test can help to identify employees who may or may not be suited to wearing a respirator or working in an environment where there are potential hazardous exposures.

Spirometry is the most common pulmonary function test. WorkSafe will use spirometry to measure:

  • Air volume breathed out, or forced vital capacity (FVC)
  • Air volume expelled in one second, or forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) and
  • The relationship between the two (the FEV1/FVC ratio)

At WorkSafe, we can provide testing onsite for your employees in Wichita and surrounding communities. Please call us today to discuss your needs.

Why Pulmonary Lung Function Test are Important

Workers in many industries become exposed to harmful airborne materials that create issues like:

  • An asthma attack
  • Chronic lung disease
  • Pulmonary fibrosis
  • Respiratory muscle weakness
  • High levels of carbon dioxide

A pulmonary function test establishes a standard for lung operation that can help detect and prevent adverse effects in the workplace.

A spirometry breathing test shows how well you can move air in and out of your lungs. Testing may be performed on workers who perform jobs that may cause exposure to possible lung hazards, are physically demanding, or require wearing a respirator. The test shows how well you can move air in and out of your lungs.

What Industries are Most affected?

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a serious illness that affects 26 million or more United States residents. Many of these cases directly tie to smoking and tobacco usage, but approximately 15% link to exposure in the workplace.

Many industries create irritants like dust, gases, fumes, and vapors, all of which can harm an employee’s lung tissue and red blood cells and constrict their chest wall muscles if they lack adequate protection. Long-term exposure results in lung diseases. Unfortunately, workers in some industries remain more susceptible than others.

While the manufacturing industry has come a long way, not every facility optimizes its ventilation. Enclosed manufacturing with open-air ventilation is standard due to strict guidelines when creating goods. Additionally, workers may produce automotive parts or chemicals, consumer goods, or textiles, which can all contain harmful irritants.

Producing and sourcing fossil fuels like coal, oil, and gas also leave an employee susceptible to a respiratory infection or other lung problems.

Although hairdressers use fewer toxic chemicals today than ever, aerosol spray bottles with harmful chemicals remain common. Inadequate ventilation increases this problem.

Pulmonary Function Tests Have a Huge Impact Upon Prevention of Lung Disease

If your business is within an industry that deals with potential airborne irritants or contaminants, then you owe it to your employees to ensure their protection. A pulmonary function test of each employee will ensure that your facility is complying with necessary health standards. A pulmonary test can also detect early signs of lung diseases in an employee.
